Jacob Butler v. Eleanor Taney. Petition for Freedom

 

To the honourable The Judges of the General Court.

The petition of Jacob Butler humbly sheweth that he is held in Slavery by Eleanor Taney of St. Mary's County, when he is entitled to his Freedom being one of the descendants in the female line of Elenor Butler a free white woman. He therefore prays your honours to grant him a summons against the said Eleanor Taney to be and appear in the honourable Court, returnable immediately, & answer the premises, & abide by such Judgment as your Honours shall see fit to make.

And he is in duty bound will pray & soforth.
