To the Honble the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington
The Petition of William Jordan humbly sheweth that he is a free person, & is unjustly held in bondage and claimed as a slave by a certain Lemuel Sawyer of Washington County in this District — Wherefore he prays your Honors to grant him the United States's Writ of Subpena to the said Sawyer directed, that he may appear and answer hereunto, & that your Petitioner may be discharged & obtain such other relief as to your Honors shall seem right.
