To the Honorable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington
The petition of Ann Kane, respectfully represents to your Honors that she is a free woman and held in custody by one Thomas Ogden who claims her as his slave. That your petitioner has no relief in the premises except through your Honorable court. She therefore prays that the said Ogden may be required by prayer process to appear before yr. Honors and shew cause if any he hath why your petitioner shall not be discharged from bondage &c
