To the Honble the Judges of the Circuit Court of the Distt. of Columbia for the County of Washington
The petition of negro Gerrard humbly sheweth that he is entitled to his freedom & is held in bondage as a slave by a certain Zachariah Cox.
Wherefore he prays your Honors to grant him a sbpa to the said Cox directed, that he may appear and answer hereunto, & that your Petitioner may be discharged from his service & obtain such other relief as may be according to law. & your Petitioner will ever pray
