To the Honourable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington.
The petition of Matilda Gray respectfully sheweth, that your petitioner & her child William who is about the age of two years are entitled to their freedom, and are nevertheless unjustly held in bondage by a certain Mary Anne Pic of Georgetown in Washington County aforesaid; wherefore your petitioner prays that your honors will order a subpœna to be issued, directed to the said Mary Anne. & that you will afford such other relief in the premisses as may be agreeable to law and as to your honors may seem just & right. and your petitioner as in duty Bound will ever pray &c
