To the Honorable the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Alexandria.
The Petition of James White a free negro, respectfully sheweth to the Court that he is illegally detained by the Jailor of this County Your petitioner prays the court to grant him a writ of Habeas Corpus returnable forthwith to be directd[?] the Jailor of this County commanding to bring your petitioner before the Court with the cause of his detention, that the court may inquire into the legality of his imprisonment.
