Rebecca v. Lloyd Pumphrey. Affidavit of Joseph Nicholson
On this 8th day of January 1825 Joseph Nicholson, appeared in person before the Subscriber a Justice of the peace in and for said County, and made oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God, that Thomas Sparling removed his negroes from Virginia into Washington County in the District of Columbia, and that the said Thomas Sparling made Georgetown his residence by eating, drinking and lodging, and that Sparling had his bed &c carried from Virginia to Georgetown, and that to the best of his knowledge & belief the negroes were so conveyed away so as to prevent their being taken in the state of Virginia.
