To the honorable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington
The humble Petition of Joan Overton sheweth, that your Petitioner is detained in slavery by Collimore Pope, Fielder Pope and Nelly Jenkins and as your petitioner is entitled to her freedom, having lineally descended in the female line from a free woman, she prays that process may be awarded to compel the appearance of the said Collimore Pope Fielder Pope and Nelly Jenkins to answer her complaint &c.
