To the Honorable the judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington &c.
The petition of Edward Chase of the City of Washington and District aforesaid humbly represents that he is entitled to his freedom but that he is now held, illegally, in slavery by one Thomas Greenfield and prays your honors that the matter may be enquired into &c.
And as in duty bound &c.
