Valentine Jones v. Nathaniel Seavers & George Hagley. Petition for Freedom
To the honourable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington.
Valentine Jones a freeman (of Colour) represents that he is unlawfully kept in slavery by Nathaniel Seavers and George Hagly of the said County, and that he is entitled to his freedom; and he prays your honours that the said Nathanial Seavers and George Hagly may be summoned according to Law to appear before your honours, that he may be decreed free, and the said Nathaniel Seavers and George Hagly may be decreed to pay all costs of this suit and as in duty bound will ever pray &c.
