To the Honble the judges of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Columbia at Washington County.

The Petition of Negro Ned, humbly shewith unto your Honors that he is free, and that he has been held in slavery unlawfully by a certain Lewis Childs, Gabriel Childs, and - Emerson that the said Lewis Childs, Gabriel Childs, & Emerson are now about to carry them out of the Jurisdiction of this honorable court. He therefore prays that the said Lewis and Gabriel Childs & the said Emerson may or caused to be brought to come before your Honors to show cause why the said Negro Ned should not be allowed to remain within the jurisdiction aforesaid until the right of this Petitioner to his freedom shall be fully enquired into by this Honorable Court, & for such other & further relief in the premises as to your Honors may seem meet &c
