To the Hon. the Circuit Court of the Dist. of Columbia, County of Washington
John Lee represents that he is a freeman, but is held in slavery by John Poole, which is contrary to Law and he prays yr Honors that said Poole may be duly summoned and that yr Petitioner may be restored to his Liberty and as in duty bound will ever pray &c
