Hiram Hunt v. Nelson Conrad, William Gadsby, & Augustin Newton. Petition for Freedom
Yr Petitioner Hiram Hunt respectfully represnts that he is a man of color and entitled to his freedom and that he is illegally detained as a slave by N. Conrad of Virginia and William Gadsby and Newton of the County of Washington in the District of Columbia, to whom said Conrad hired yr Petitioner as a slave. Yr Petitioner therefore prays that the said N. Conrad, William Gadsby and Newton, may be cited to appear as the Law directs and that yr Petitioner's case may be adjudged ad that his liberty be granted to him and that said Defendants may pay all costs &c. And as in duty bound he will ever pray &c.
