To the Honourable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Columbia County of Washington

The Petition of Negress Chloe Ann respectfully sheweth unto your honors that she has been, and now is, imprisoned in the jail of this county as the property of unlawfully held in bondage by Isaac Franklin and John Armfield and then detained as a runaway slave. Your Petitioner avers unto your honors that she is unjustly claimed to be held in bondage by the parties above named and prays the protection of the laws and that your honors may cause the claim set up against her liberty by the said Isaac Franklin & John Armfield to be brought to speedy Trial. And as in duty bound she will ever pray &c.
