Adam Bayley v. John Lee. Petition for Freedom

 

To the Hon. Judges of the Circuit Court of the U. States for Washington County in the District of Columbia

Adam Bayley of the aforesaid County respectfully represents that he is entitled to his freedom by the Laws of the Land[?] and that he is illegally detained in slavery by a certain John Lee of said County. He therefore prays yr Honors that the said John Lee may be summoned and cited to appear as the law directs and that your Honors do adjudge and decree that yr Petitioner is entitled to his freedom and that he be discharged from the service of the said John Lee who illegally[?] detains[?]. Yr Petitioner also prays for all other and further relief in the premises and for all and every other order and citation to affect the [illegible], the [illegible] is particularly prayed for in this his petition. That yr Honors may deem proper and fit to allow him in that he may be entitled to by the Laws of the County and as in duty bound, he will ever pray &c.
