Eliza Evans v. Charles Botts. Petition for Freedom
To the Honorable the Judges of the Circuit of the District of Columbia, sitting for the County of Washington.
The Petition of Eliza Evans for herself and child William humbly sheweth that she is a free woman of color. That she has a son who is also free; that she and her son have been seized, are now in the custody of and claimed as slaves by Mr Charles Botts who is about to carry them out of the District of Columbia. and she prays your Honors that this petition may be filed, and a subpoena issued against the said Charles Botts and your Petitioner will ever &c.
