To the Honorable the Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for the County of Washington.

The Petition of Negro Ben humbly sheweth unto that in the year eighteen hundred and ten one Charles Coomes, then residing in Charles County in the State of Maryland, to whom your petitioner belonged, sold your petitioner to one Isaac Dawes of Georgetown in said District to serve the said Dawes until your petitioner should attain age of thirty five years and then to be free. That your petitioner was born in the year 1784 and attained the age of thirty five the year 1820. That the said Dawes transferred your petitioner to one James Moore by whom your petitioner is now most unjustly & illegally held in bondage. Your petitioner therefore prays your Honors to grant unto him the U.S. writ of subpoena & against the said   Moore and such other relief as to your Honors may seem just reasonable and proper
