Jeffrey Peters v. Joseph McKinstrey. Petition for Freedom

 

To the Hon. Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia for Washington County

The Petition of Jeffrey Peters represents that he is a freeman and by the Laws of the county entitled to act as such, notwithstanding which he is now confined in jail and claimed by a certain Joseph McKinstrey as his slave.

Yr Petitioner therefore prays yr Honors to issue subpoena as the Law directs for said Joseph and that yr Petitioner may have his right to his freedom established by a decision of yr Hon. Hourt and as in duty bound will ever pray &c
