To the Honorable Judges of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia:

The prayer of your petitioner respectfully represents unto your honors, that she is unlawfully held in bondage by one Ann Tuner who resides in Orange County in the state of Virginia, and sometime in October, in the year 1842, imported her (your petitioner) into the county of Washington in the District of Columbia, to reside therein & where she has ever since resided contrary to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided the said defendant being at that time and ever since in the State of Virginia and residing there. She therefore prays she may be discharged from unlawful bondage and as in duty bound will ever pray &c
